Pioneer Brewing

Craft beer. Before it was trendy.

Before the home-brew renaissance. Before the micro then macro brewers brought mass production methods to the mash, there was pioneer beer. The original craft beer.

Water and Grains. Fire. Aromatics and Yeast.

Join Friends of Lower Fort Garry and The Brew School of Savour Winnipeg as we offer this hands-on, all-grain, Pioneer Beer brew session at Lower Fort Garry.

Dating back to the 1830s, you’ll have exclusive access to this national historic site where, ringed by impressive limestone walls, the original buildings will become our backdrop for a one-of-a-kind craft-beer experience.

Learn about the history of alcohol in North America, in particular in relation to the Hudson’s Bay Company, while you become the brew master. We’ll take you through the entire brewing process, from grain to growler as you make your very own, take-home batch of Pioneer Beer inspired by a traditional 19th century recipe. Mashing-in, the sparge, wort and trub…we promise it will all make sense and you’ll leave with great memories, plus the gear and knowledge to continue making small-batch beer at home.

Throughout the evening, listen to tales of the fort from days of the past, and the ghosts that still haunt this site.

Ticket (available here) Includes:

  • 32oz take-home of Pioneer Beer (wort)
  • Primary Fermentation Pail w Lid
  • Yeast
  • 32oz Howler with Lid
  • Carbonation tabs

Glitter by the River

A good, old fashioned Manitoba social in support of the Andrew Henderson Memorial Scholarship

In 2016, Andrew Henderson—a former LFG staff member and strong supporter of the Friends of Lower Fort Garry—passed away after a three-year struggle with cancer. It is safe to say Andrew had an incredible impact on those who knew him. Beyond his infectious sense of humour, his devotion to learning and teaching, and his passion for performing arts, Andrew was committed to helping everyone love themselves for who they are. It was this inspiring and positive outlook on life, perhaps above all else, that left such a mark on so many.

To honour Andrew’s memory, the Friends of Lower Fort Garry will be establishing the Andrew Henderson Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship will be awarded to a deserving grade 12 student from the Lord Selkirk Regional Comprehensive Secondary School—Andrew’s alma mater—who shares his passion for the arts and history, and who plans to attend a post-secondary institution upon graduation.

To raise the necessary funds, the Friends will be hosting a party on July 28th inside the walls of the historic Lower Fort Garry, just 15 minutes north of Winnipeg. This will be a night to celebrate Andrew’s love for life, music and dancing!

In addition, there will be many social favourites including a 50/50 draw, and a uniquely Manitoban snack menu.

All proceeds will go towards the scholarship fund and investment. Tax receipts available for certain donation levels.
